Finally, a song for the front line workers – be they nurses, doctors, teachers, caregivers, or the military. It hasn’t been an easy couple of years, and still they carry bravely onward.
I am very proud to announce that a new single I wrote with my favourite co-writer and friend, Barbro Schoenberger, has released to Canadian Country Radio via DMDS. “Soldier’s Heart” is a very special tune. Barbro is a songwriter and school teacher in Germany, and we wrote this song during 2021, when she was having a very difficult time managing the new COVID regulations she was having to comply with in her classroom.
With all the difficulty faced by front line workers, we decided to write a song that would thank them, and show them our support. To get more perspective on the song, I also polled some many front line workers on Facebook to ask why they chose the career they did, and how they were feeling.
It became apparent that the pandemic was so much more difficult for them than ever anticipated. A Barbro said, “I would never claim that I’m a soldier, as I never signed up knowing I may die in this job, but I think I now have some idea how it feels to keep on going because your country needs you, even if it is almost too much to bear!”
Hence the concept of having a soldier’s heart, sacrificing your needs and pressing on because your country truly needs you; putting others’ life and death before your own.
As the song says, “When the battle’s over, you’ll know just what you’ve done.” We hope if you’re a front line worker, or a soldier, you’ll find out one day what an incredible difference you’ve made in world, and thank you for your sacrifice. I’ve included the lyrics below.
You’ll find a lovely new lyric video here on this website.
SOLDIER’S HEART -Jacqueline Drew / Barbro Schoenberger
Did you try to teach the dog to read when you were six?
Or make a sling from a handkerchief and seal it with a kiss?
And each November you’d thank those who died so you’d be free
Never thinking you’d know how they felt to serve so faithfully
Now you’re standing at the front lines while they push you from behind
And it’s testing all the strength you have not to lose your mind
To hold the world together when it’s falling so apart
It doesn’t take a soldier but it takes a soldier’s heart
Are you getting sleep at all or are you fighting your worst fears?
Are you thinking of your loved ones wishing they could just be here?
So many souls who need you and you’ll never let them down
Praying at the end of this, you’ll still be around
Now you’re standing at the front lines while they push you from behind
And it’s testing all the strength you have not to lose your mind
To hold the world together when it’s falling so apart
It doesn’t take a soldier but it takes..
Gentle hands just like yours are how the war is won
And when the battle’s over, you’ll know just what you’ve done
Cause you’re standing at the front lines while they push you from behind
And it’s testing all the strength you have not to lose your mind
To hold the world together when it’s falling so apart
It doesn’t take a soldier but it takes a soldier’s heart…a soldier’s heart
