Releasing March 27, 2020, Futility is the second single from Jacquie Drew’s upcoming 2020 album, Lifelong Truth and is an acoustic, fast-grooving, wry commentary on the hopelessness of attempting to change someone you’re (ahem) trying to love. Using comically audacious metaphors such as “crossing the ocean in water wings” and “cramming fat fingers into tiny rings”, Drew is playfully self-effacing, “like a kick in the head when I realize it” and yet still retains her strong persona throughout. Musically, the track blazes through twisting chromatic lines and fresh chord sequences that seamlessly fuse folk, pop and country flavours, using only acoustic instruments in live-studio performance. Featured on the track are the talents of multi-award-winning guitarist/producer Steve Dawson, virtuoso Vancouver-based upright bassist Jeremy Holmes and renowned folk drummer/percussionist Jamie Dick. Futility shows us that defeat can be fun, when handled with this kind of style.
Recorded on analog equipment live-off-the-floor in Nashville’s HenHouse Studio, the track was written by Jacquie Drew, with the assistance of her former keyboard player Steve Bridgett, bassist Richard Erickson and drummer Johnny Gozde, who were the core members of her band at the time, in 2016-2017.
The song will release globally through online channels such as iTunes, Spotify and Google Play and will also be available for mp3 download off CD Baby.com on and after March 27, 2020.
FUTILITY (c) 2016 (Drew/Erickson/Gozde/Bridgett)
Like an old dog trying to scramble up a tree
Or cruising town with no gasoline
Tryin’ to sound smart after too much booze
That’s about my chances of ever getting through to you
But just when I think that I’m getting closer
Your empty eyes just glaze on over
Like a kick in the head when I realize it,
Cause there’s only one way I can describe it
Futility is all I see
Cause there’s just no possibility
And I know that hope will be the death of me
But maybe just, maybe just, maybe just, maybe just
Crossing the ocean in water wings
Cramming fat fingers into tiny rings
Tryin’ not to snore when I’m fast asleep
That’s about my chances, of you ever pleasin’ me
But just when I think that I’m getting closer,
Your empty eyes just glaze on over
Like a kick in the head when I realize it,
Cause there’s only one way I can describe it
Futility is all I see
Cause there’s just no possibility
And I know that hope will be the death of me
But maybe just, maybe just, maybe just, maybe just
And I know you’re searching everywhere
For that perfect blend of cash and hair
And if that’s right, well then I guess I’d say
Maybe , maybe, maybe I’m too good for you anyway
Fu – til – ity – it – y…is all I see – I see
Cause there’s just no – just no – possibility
And I know that hope – that hope – will be the death of me
Cause baby baby baby baby it’s futility
